Learning to be kind and compassionate to ourselves is vital to learning to be kind and compassionate to others; and that kindness includes helping our self in practical ways to cooperate and fulfill our own needs. Many of us have sleep problems, and sleep is a basic need for our centered well being. When we take the time and bring our genuine desire to hear our own answers--to clearly ask ourselves what we need, (for instance to sleep more peacefully and happily), we can be surprised sometimes at what we discover. It sounds like a simple enough proposition, yet its startling how many people never seriously, actually do this. So often we are living harried, hurried, stressful days that seem to require we constantly adjust and close off and close down our inward awareness; to a point where we literally dont notice our own needs. We begin each busy day again, and dont recognize were growing invisibly further and further away from our Self, gradually forgetting we could do things a different way... Its not that we dont know or understand why we should help ourselves with kinder more compassionate practices and care. We just begin gradually discounting the importance of our need to be actively concerned with helping ourselves bring genuine peace and well being back into our experiences. It takes some thought, some literal Self-to-self quizzing--some Self-to-self attention, and we probably have lots of legitimate reasons for setting this aside. Perhaps were just too tired each night to think about it. Sometimes, the obvious questions are not the real questions we want to ask about. To explore why we might be resisting, even sabotaging helping ourselves by accepting so many layers of equally valid concerns coming ahead of our own needs, can be a bigger question that we simply arent ready to hear our deeper answers to. In the Self-to-self relationship we are never pressured... there are no demanding musts or shoulds. When it comes to caring about our own well being, we are ready to find out more --- whenever we decide to--whenever we want to. Sometimes just that knowledge is the empowerment we need to ask ourselves a different set of questions that can help us reconnect with a genuinely loving understanding of what we can do to help our self experience our lives in more meaningful ways.
