Learning to become conscious of and read your vagal tone is - TopicsExpress

Learning to become conscious of and read your vagal tone is incredibly important. Do you feel secure with your partner? Do you feel secure with the friends you hang out with? Do you feel secure in your work place? Do you feel secure with family members? If, like so many of us you were brought up in a hostile family environment you would be forgiven for having grown accustomed to trying to make the best in less than friendly circumstances. You stay in situations that dont make you feel that great. The healthiest thing to do is to identify when anything makes you feel less than secure (that subtle icky feeling you get when you identify and sense slight negative and not so negative nuances from friends, family members and work colleagues etc) and instead turn your attention to seeking out people, places, work and situations that automatically created a vagal parasympathetic response (you know without doubt you are liked and accepted by these people and as a result you feel secure). psychologytoday writes: The sense of safety that comes from being in the company of loved ones is partly created by vagal-parasympathetic activation which promotes an easy and relaxed integration of breathing and heart rate, both of which are located in the chest. Feelings of insecurity get the heart and the breath out of synch and activate the sympathetic nervous system as if we were dealing with a threat (elevated heart rate and blood pressure), and can create a sense of unease in the chest, and even pain.
