Learnings of the Sport Thursday Nighter crit: dont be That Guy. Small race tonight, less than 10. A few riders who showed evidence of not being super-experienced at racing, including one who, as I was following his wheel, nearly ran into the guy ahead of him twice in one lap. I didnt like that, so I decided to take the wheel from him. He tried to keep the wheel. So I elbowed him off it, and when he called me on it, I told him why I took the wheel. Two laps later, I thought better of it, and apologised to him. In a low-cat crit, its not reasonable to assume other riders are comfortable with casual contact, just because you are. Its not reasonable to assume theyll react well (and I dont men emotionally, I mean in terms of not panic-crashing), and its not a good plan to be the guy who escalates or teaches others that casual elbowing is part of the deal in low-cat racing. Next time, Ill save it for the track.
