Least Tern Story from a trip out yesterday. Mom, dad, and 2 teen daughters are scavenging inside the fencing. I ask them to stay outside, give them a little information about the birds, and show them the tern chicks. As they wander ahead I see them going in and out the fencing. When we catch up to dad and the girls Im told they are picking up garbage. I note that the shells are not necessarily better on the other side of the fence, give them a little more information about the nesting success issues, and suggest that they could get a better understanding if they check the website and arrange to volunteer to take down the fencing. They tell me they do visit some Audubon events. So the example to their kids is: Do what you want as the rules dont apply to you and you can lie about what you are doing if it suits your purpose. Interesting.
