Leave the light on Tom Bodett actually ad-libbed the slogan: “We’ll leave the light on for you.” When the Motel 6 hotel chain hired him to do a radio spot for them, he threw in the now-famous line and earned the role of spokesman for the chain. The company wanted to give the impression that, if you have to travel away from home, then at least come to a place that feels like coming home. Stay the night somewhere where you’re wanted and expected. The light will be on just for you. Since 1986, Bodett’s homespun line has closed out the often humorous radio ads. Nine years ago, the chain also started using Bodett’s voice for its morning wake-up calls for guests! If you’ve traveled away from home, there is nothing like coming back and seeing the lights on to welcome you home. We turn into the driveway and breathe a deep sigh of relief. The light tells us we’ve been expected, planned for, looked for. So what kind of light would you turn on if you knew Jesus was looking to come to your home? How would you prepare your home for Him to be a guest there? What room arrangements would there be? What would you plan to cook? How would you want to make Jesus feel at home in your house and in your life? The prophet Isaiah first proclaims the message of hope that John the Baptist would later echo: “God is coming! Remove the obstacles, straighten the path, turn on the lights, and start looking! God is on the way!” The reality is God is always coming to us, often incognito. We don’t always recognize when Jesus shows up, we’re not always expecting someone like Him to actually come to us. The good news is that ever since the resurrection, Jesus has been on the move in our world. He never stops coming to us. He’s always on the road that leads to us, looking for a place to be at home with us – to be at home in us. Imagine the relief and joy when Jesus turns the corner and discovers that we’ve left the light on for Him. So flip the switch. He’s on the way. In fact, Hes closer than we ever dreamed. Grace and peace, Michael
