Leave your ego at the door. I once had a drum teacher who had a sign on his door that read, leave your ego at the door. I did not get it at first. Later on in my life, after I started teaching I got it immediately. We all have different ways we learn, different ways we want to be taught, ways we want to be talked to , related with and so on and so fourth. When we learn traditional drumming there is some surrender involved and often we have to give up some of our preconceived needs, especially the need to be taken care of. I am not talking about allowing yourself to be disrespected as a human being , i am talking about dropping the ego and allowing someone else to control the learning experience by allowing them to teach you how they see fit, rather then how we see fit. We think because we are paying money we then have the right to dictate how our class goes. But when you learn traditional drumming from a qualified teacher especially someone from another culture it is important to let them show you the way. You are not simply learning patterns, you are actually allowing yourself to have a cultural experience. If you allow this, instead of insisting you imprint your own process on what is happening, you will have a much more gratifying and fuller experience if you do indeed let it happen.
