Leaves that are green with Pabs and Friends “I was - TopicsExpress

Leaves that are green with Pabs and Friends “I was twenty-one years when I wrote this song. Im (sixty-five) now but I wont be for long. Time hurries on. And the leaves that are green turn to brown.” (Leaves That Are Green, Paul Simon 1965) A cut from the Sound of Silence album, Leaves That Are Green is a lesser known song from the Simon and Garfunkel duo. Thus, few would recognize the little twist former rebel-turned-politician-turned-sportsman-turned-folksinger Pablito Araneta put into the lyrics of the song. It’s a small concession, a candid admission to the passage of time (and quite a long one at that). Yet it underscores what the song exactly evokes – that time, for many of us, has indeed hurried on and that the leaves of our lives, once green, have turned to grey, er, brown. Pabs, in his latest incarnation as some sort of Tambourine Man, takes the stage at Regatta Residence Hotel this Thursday. October 16 singing selected songs from the 60s and 70s -- songs of a gone-by age and era, songs that may resonate only among those of a certain age. But songs that undoubtedly linger in the mind and still quicken the heart, songs that tell us of a time “when all our troubles seemed so far away” and “love was such an easy game to play.” But Pabs wouldn’t be alone in bringing us Homeward Bound with his music. In what could be a kind of “elderly brothers” concert, Pabs will be getting by with a little help from his friends and, hopefully, some kindred souls who will come not just to listen but to groove to the music of Peter, Paul , and Mary, The Beatles, Everly Brothers, Chad and Jeremy, and Bob Dylan with, hopefully, some Bob Marley, James Taylor, John Denver, and Neil Young thrown in for good measure. Playing Puff to Pabs’ Jackie Paper is Francis Benedicto, the Regatta Residence kingpin who has himself seen some Fire and Rain in various stages of his life as activist, bureaucrat, expat, academic and now hotelier. Francis, who has recently turned dual citizen (Filipino, senior) dubbed the singular event “Good Times - an acoustic evening with Pabs and friends.” Indeed, if you feel like Crying in the Rain or Knocking on Heaven’s Door, or Something, go fill up your senses this coming Thursday. Let Pabs and Friends bring you to places you’ll remember. Throwback Thursday, right?
