Leaving the shul this morning to the tears of some parents and the joyful good riddance of others, we headed towards the M40. Lunch was eaten by most of the Scouts by the time we passed Beaconsfield and by 10:30 we arrived at Youlbury campsite. The patrols were revealed to all the Scouts on the coach – no tears…result! The new sleeping tents, dining shelters and store tents (which strangely look like toilet tents) were all put up in record time. Some over zealous Scouts over pumped their tent and POP went one of the air poles – ooops. Replacement parts will arrive via DHL in the morning. The Scouts carried on their work – wet pits, food supplies, gas lights, crockery were all handed out to the patrols who continued to build their patrol sites. After going through the camp rules, we all sat down for Schnitzel, potatoes and peas, the Scouts all eating together in their patrols Washing up was done quickly, and then we headed off for our first activities of the camp – rifle shooting, climbing wall and zip wire. Some of the Scouts looked too comfortable holding their guns- I’m sleeping with one eye open tonight. Back to the campsite, it was now getting dark. Scouts were desperate to get cooking with their gas stoves, so it was hot chocolate all round cooked by themselves. Lesson learnt – clean your saucepan BEFORE you cook – black floaty bits in their drinks…….nice! Scout OS keen to boil his milk in the kettle – nooooooo! The PLs and APLs started planning their expedition for next week and the rest of the Scouts got a fire lit and we all sang a happy birthday to RS. 15 today! What a busy day – roll on Thursday. Let’s hope for a lie in beyond 6am. G’night. Stephen
