Leeds Castle was built in 1119 by Robert de Crevecoeur and remained in his family until the 1260s, and finally becoming a residence of the English monarchy in 1278 with King Edward I (Longshanks). It remained in the royal family through 1552, the last royals being Henry VIII and his second wife Catherine of Aragon. One bit of historical trivia: Catherine of Aragon’s daughter, Queen Elizabeth I, was held prisoner at Leeds prior to her succession to the throne on suspicion of supporting the Protestants, prior to her reign. Towards the end of the Renaissance era, Leeds Castle was used as an arsenal and prison during the English Civil War. The castle itself only escaped destruction as the owner of the time, Sir Cheney Culpeper, had decided to side with the Parliamentarians.
