Leeds Maccabi U8s Jets v Keighley Shamrocks Crusaders A strong Jets team kicked off a beautiful Autumnal morning with confidence running high. Following our last encounter with the Shammies, a 5-5 draw at home, the coaches encouraged a winning mentality within the Jets. The first quarter was an interesting tactical battle, with both teams battling hard but remaining cautious as not wanting to concede first. Eitan Aibi started in goals and make some unconventional saves that Bruce Grobbelaar would have been proud of, but he did well and helped the Jets keep a clean sheet in the first quarter. 0-0 after 10 minutes. The deadlock was finally broken in the 18th minute when a Keighley player handled the ball in the area, the ref didnt hesitate to blow for a penalty to the Jets. Captain Elijah Berman didn’t hesitate to take advantage from the spot – 1-0 Jets! A minute later, the Jets were pegged back after the Shammies took advantage of a couple of errors – 1-1, but two quick goals before half-time restored the Jets lead. Elijah ran up the wing, linked well with Max Quayle who then took his shot nicely for a well deserved goal – 1-2. Within a minute, Elijah made it 1-3 after a hard shot forced the goalie to fumble the ball into the net. As soon as the match kicked off for the 2nd half, the Shammies went on the attack, but this was thwarted by Max Quayle with a superb slide tackle to put the ball out for a corner, which was subsequently saved by the rock in goals, Isaac Bordorley. In the following minute, Elijah showed the watching Huddersfield scouts how football should be played, with a remarkable solo goal. He won the ball in midfield, took on about 4 Shammies and unleashed a wonderful strike into the top corner. Seriously, top draw from the Captain. Elijah scored again a few minutes later to make it 1-5 and the Jets seemed to be coasting. A couple more attacks followed, with Freddie Rosenberg going on a few nice runs from midfield, including a chance he just put wide, and Oliver Burton also hit the post following a cross from Elijah. The Shammies hit one back after they broke through the Jets solid defence and the Jets were winning 2-5 going into the final quarter. In the final quarter, the coaches encouraged a brave and solid performance to see out the win and the Jet’s didn’t disappoint. Despite the Shammies setting up what could have been a nervy end to the game when they scored to make it 3-5, the Jets held on and hit a further 3 goals in the final 10, with Elijah grabbing his 5th, and Eitan Aibi being rewarded for his great performance with a goal. Finally, Oliver Burton finished a 1 on 1 to see the game out 3-8. A great team performance against a strong Shammies team who arent used to losing, but Man of the Match goes to Elijah Berman for a phenomenal display.
