Left: 14x6.5 DW brass collectors snare. Right: 14x6.5 Mapex Black Panther Machete steel snare. After spending the time to tune/play with these today, Im considering these two as brother and sister snares. Theyre both the same size and depth and have similar tuning, however their qualities in sound differ so much. I have an older remo emperor x with a single moongel on the DW. Im unsure of what reso is currently on there. Snare wires are puresound EQ wires. On the Mapex I have an older Evans hybrid as a batter and an Evans hazy 300 on reso with the stock Mapex wires. Both batters are tuned to medium-high (probably a little more on the high side for the DW) and both reso heads are tuned at about medium tension. As you would expect on the Mapex, the crack it gives is 10/10. Having it in a medium tuning also allows for a little more of that oomph to come after the initial hit. In saying that, the hybrid eliminates a lot of the natural tone the snare would give off (Im not really complaining, Ive never been a fan of bulk overtones). The sound it offers is a very distinct crack with a bit of the extra fat under it. No overtones. On the opposite scale, the DW offers tone galore in a variety of tunings. Ive tuned it slightly higher because Im a bit of a crack addict (heh), however the higher tuning doesnt sacrifice any of the drums beautiful warmth. As stated earlier, Im not a huge fan of overtones, which is why Ive put on a single moongel, however the placement of the gel still allows for the drum to sing a bit. Verdict- I was going to sell the Mapex because I couldnt get it to sound how I wanted, but after putting the hybrid on, I may keep it around. I think it would be a great drum to gig/tour with, as the hybrids tend to keep their tuning nicely. I will still gig with the DW (it would be a sin not to), but Im really looking forward to hearing it under mics in the studio later this year.
