Left-alliance warns of Package Politics - Extends Support to Gorkhaland demand The All India Left Coordination (a conglomeration of Left parties) cautioned the Hills against ‘Package politics’ anticipating a rerun of the dark days during Subhash Ghisingh’s rule in the Hills. “A mass movement for Gorkhaland that had been spawned by the UPA’s decision to carve out Telangana was compromised by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha ( GJM.) However the GJM’s voice against the government was weak. The GJM betrayed the mass movement and settled for packages (development and financial) through the GTA. With the package politics of Ghisingh’s era back, the common man is being suppressed. Only a handful is being benefited owing to package politics. The Government is indulging in the politics of suppression in the Hills using the state machinery and by appeasing a few “Abhijit Majumdar, central committee member of the CPIML (Liberation) party, said. Majumdar asked the Hills to remain alert, as the GJM would try to prop up the Trinamool Congress candidate in the Darjeeling constituency in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. “This will stifle the Gorkhaland demand. On one side, we have to stop the UPA from coming into power as they have double standards. While they carve out Telangana for political gains, they do not want to entertain the Gorkhaland demand. The communal and Fascist BJP has to be stopped,” Majumdar said. His prescription for achieving Gorkhaland was striking a balance between emotions and a perfect strategy. The AILC held a rally in Darjeeling town on Sunday. National level leaders of the AILC addressed the rally at the Darjeeling Chowk Bazar. The Communist Party of Revolutionary Marxist (CPRM), which conducted a post mortem of the present political scenario in the Hills, stated that a clear line has been drawn between pro- Gorkhaland and antiGorkhaland forces. “There is no other alternative than the CPRM to carry forward the Gorkhaland demand to the national mainstream,” RB Rai, president of the CPRM Central Committee, said. Blaming the GJM for the disintegration of the Gorkhaland Joint Action Committee (GJAC- a conglomeration of pro-Gorkhaland forces), Rai said, “We had formed the GJAC to provide more muscle to the mass movement for Gorkhaland, as a consolidated movement was the need of the hour. The main demand of the constituent parties was the scrapping of the GTA for Gorkhaland. However the GJM remained indecisive on this issue. They kept on delaying the scrapping of the GTA and finally returned to the GTA. The movement was suspended. The GJAC became redundant. The GJM have betrayed the Gorkhaland demand and the Gorkhas.” Uday Bhatt of the Lal Nisan Party (ML) of Maharshtra said, “Let the rally serve a clear warning to the Government that the Hills people won’t tolerate the politics of oppression anymore. The day is a turning point for Darjeeling. We will carry the voice of Gorkhaland to every corner of the country.” Rai said that while the CPRM under the AILC would raise the Gorkhaland demand, the party would also continue with the class struggle.
