Left-handed children can apply to the Department of Education for concessions when writing exams Left-handed children statistically fare worse in exams than their right-handed peers. Its often more to do with their ability to physically write the exam rather than how well they know the work. Lefties tend to struggle more with handwriting form, grip, and posture among other things. This leads to fatigue, compromised quality of work and/or illegibility, which may result in exams not being completed under time pressure, or marked down because it cannot be read. The objective of any examination or test is more about assessing what the learner knows, rather than how they cope under pressure. With that in mind, the education department can give certain concessions when writing exams, specific to the learners challenges. Be aware that not everyone is a candidate and this is not a soft option. It is a lengthy process, and parents will need to be able to evidence why their child needs extra time or a computer or similar. The purpose of this post is simply to highlight that there are options for learners who genuinely struggle during an exam period. Ask your childs school about the concessions process if you feel that it would benefit your left-handed child. Keep asking. Be empowered.
