Left us on this date (Nov. 15) in 2003: Speedy West (cause undisclosed, age 79), one of country music’s greatest pedal steel guitarists, best remembered for his work with Jimmy Bryant & Tennessee Ernie Ford; hired by Spade Cooley in 1948 to perform in his big swing band, he became a full time session player by 1949 - he performed on upwards of 6,000 recordings by over 175 artists, including Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Jo Stafford, Johnnie Ray, Loretta Lynn & Bobby Bare; when work for country musicians began to dry up in Los Angeles in the early-’60s, he moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma to manage the distribution center for Fender Instruments; he continued to play, but not nearly as much as he had in California…
