Left us on this day (Aug. 30) in 1995: Sterling Morrison (non-Hodgkins lymphoma, age 53), best remembered as a founding member, guitarist & background vocalist for legendary & influential New York City alternative rock forefathers, The Velvet Underground, first active from 1964-73; in a 1982 interview, Brian Eno made the often repeated statement that while the first VU album may have sold only 30,000 copies in its early years, everyone who bought one of those copies started a band; Sterling earned a Ph.D. in medieval studies at University of Texas in 1971 & left band to pursue academia in Austin, Texas, later becoming the captain of a Houston tugboat; he played in former VU colleague Mo Tuckers band in the late-80s/early-90s; he participated in the 1992-93 Velvet Underground reunion, touring Europe & releasing the double album Live MCMXCIII; the band was inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame in 1996, by Patti Smith - at the ceremony, bandmates Lou Reed, John Cale & Tucker performed a song entitled Last Night I Said Goodbye to My Friend, which was dedicated to Sterling…
