Left us on this day (Dec. 1) in 1986: New Orleans R&B singer Lee Dorsey (emphysema, age 61), whose upbeat party sound made him a favorite of the genre; he began working with legendary New Orleans musician & producer Allen Toussaint in the 50s, the pair first teaming to score 1961 US #7 Ya-Ya; after leaving the music biz for a few years to work as a car mechanic, Lee returned with a vengeance in 1965, releasing such classics as Working In A Coal Mine (1966 US #8 Pop & #5 R&B) & Yes We Can (later, a 70s hit for The Pointer Sisters); in 1976, he appeared on the album I Dont Want to Go Home by Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, which led to more recordings on his own with ABC Records, including the 1978 album Night People; in 1980, he opened for The Clash on their legendary US tour; his songs have been covered by such diverse artists as Devo, Petula Clark, The Pointer Sisters & John Lennon…
