Left us on this day (Jan. 11) in 2005: Spencer Dryden (colon cancer, age 67), best remembered as the drummer in the classic lineup of cornerstone San Francisco psych rock band, Jefferson Airplane, followed by country rock group New Riders of the Purple Sage (NRPS); the former jazzer served in the Airplane from spring of 1966 to winter 1969-70 (replacing original drummer Skip Spence); Spencer created an exceptional rhythm section with bassist Jack Casady & soon became one of the most well-respected drummers of that scene; The JA song Lather was written by Grace Slick on the occasion of his 30th birthday; after leaving the group, he served as a key member of NRPS from late 1970-77 (including their 1971 US #39 self-titled debut), after which he managed the group; he went on to play a lengthy stint with The Dinosaurs & Barry Meltons band before retiring from drumming in 1995; in 1996, Spencer was inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame along with the rest of Jefferson Airplane, playing with the band for the first time since 1970…(this & more featured today at Roch Parisiens Rocon Communications music chat page...)
