Left us on this day (Jan. 13) in 1979: American jazz, blues, soul & gospel vocalist, songwriter & musician Donny Hathaway (suspicious fall from a 15th story balcony, age 34), best remembered for his duets with former college classmate, Roberta Flack; the two recorded a series of hits throughout the ’70s, including The Closer I Get to You, You’ve Got a Friend & Where is the Love (1973 US #1 single & Grammy award); he also released several hit recordings of his own - with his very first single The Ghetto, Part I in 1970, Rolling Stone marked him as a major new force in soul music; his 1972 Donny Hathaway Live has been cited as an influence by countless soul/R&B artists to this day; he began his career as a studio musician & songwriter in Chicago, working with the likes of Aretha Franklin & The Staple Singers; he soon became the house producer for Curtis Mayfield’s Curtom Records; as a songwriter, Donny is also known for the holiday R&B standard This Christmas, recorded by Diana Ross, Gloria Estefan & many others…
