Left us on this day (Jan. 24) in 1963: American lyricist & librettist Otto Harbach (natural causes, age 89), best remembered for his work on some 50 musical comedies; considered one of the first great popular music song lyricists, he penned the words for many numbers now in the standard repertoire, mostly written in the 1920s-30s, including Yesterdays, Indian Love Call, Cuddle Up a Little Closer, One Alone, The Night Was Made For Love, I Wont Dance & She Didnt Say Yes; his most famous co-write was Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, a US & UK #1 for The Platters in 1958; Otto was a charter member of ASCAP in 1914, serving as its director (1920–63), vice president (1936–40) & finally president (1950–53)…
