Left us on this day (Jan. 26) in 2011: Gladys Horton (in a nursing home following several strokes & years of declining health, age 65) best remembered as the founding lead singer of influential Motown girl group, The Marvelettes; formed in Detroit in 1960, the vocal trio would go on to score 23 US Pop & 21 R&B charting hits; their most popular songs included Playboy, Beechwood 4-5789, Too Many Fish In The Sea & their signature Please, Mr. Postman, which was Motown’s first #1 pop hit in 1961; they were the blueprint for future hitmakers like Martha Reeves & The Vandellas & The Supremes; Gladys left the group in 1967 but reunited with them during the late-80s; The Marvelettes were nominated for induction into the R&R Hall Of Fame in 2012…
