Left us on this day (Jun. 29) in 1964: American jazz alto saxophonist, flautist & bass clarinetist Eric Dolphy (coma brought on by an undiagnosed diabetic condition, age 36), considered a major influence on the world of free jazz & avant garde improvisation; he was one of the earliest flute & bass clarinet soloists of importance; his improvisational style was characterized by the use of wide intervals, in addition to using an array of extended techniques to reproduce human & animal-like effects which almost literally made his instruments speak; over his short career, he performed or recorded with such greats as Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman & Max Roach; as a band leader himself, he recorded such early-60s albums as Outward Bound (1960), Out There (1960), Far Cry (1961), At the Five Spot, Vol. 1 (1961) & Out to Lunch! (1964); Eric was posthumously inducted into the Down Beat magazine Hall of Fame in 1964…
