Left us on this day (Oct. 14) in 1977: Bing Crosby (heart attack, age 74), one of America’s most beloved entertainers, with a singing & acting career that spanned over 50 years; as a pop singer, he was a direct influence on the likes of Frank Sinatra, Perry Como & Dean Martin; it was estimated in 1948 that his songs made up more than half of the 80,000 weekly hours devoted to music on radio; he is credited with over 1,700 recordings, almost 400 of which were Top 30 hits, with 41 making it to #1; his 1942, 1945 & 1947 US #1 hit White Christmas remains the best-selling single of all time; Bing heavily invested in Ampex in the late-’40s, helping it develop the first commercial reel-to-reel recorder in North America; he gave one of the first Ampex Model 200 recorders to his friend, musician Les Paul, which led directly to Pauls invention of multitrack recording; in 1963, he received the first Grammy Global Achievement Award; he is one of 22 people to have three stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (one for motion pictures, radio & audio recording)…
