Left us on this day (Oct. 25) in 2002: Richard Harris (Hodgkins disease, age 72), best remembered as an actors actor until he was approached in 1968 by his friend, songwriter Jimmy Webb, with a proposed epic-length pop project that he agreed to record; clocking in at 7:30, MacArthur Park rose to US #2 & shattered AM radios established prohibition against playing singles greater than 3:30 in length; the accompanying album A Tramp Shining was one of the great pop music LPs of the 60s, a sophisticated & exquisitely-produced concept album; the follow-up The Yard Went On Forever (also in collaboration with Webb) was arguably stronger still; as an actor Richard had many notable roles, but became a favorite to a whole new generation in his latter years, playing Albus Dumbledore in both Harry Potter & the Philosophers Stone & Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets…
