Legendary Hollywood and Broadway actress and civil rights activist Ruby Dee passed away at the age of 91 on Wednesday night at her New Rochelle, NY home. nydn.us/1n7Mvbi During her career, Cleveland-born, New York-raised Dee has been awarded an Emmy, a Grammy and a Screen Actors Guild award, among others. She earned an Academy Award nomination, for Best Supporting Actress, for “American Gangster” (2007) in which she played Denzel Washingtons mother. In addition to starring on Broadway (“Take It From the Top!,’ “Two Hah Hahs and a Homeboy”), Dee appeared in numerous movies (Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing” and “Jungle Fever”), and TV shows (“All God’s Children,” “Feast of All Saints”).
