Legendary playback singer Yesudas turns 75 years. Gori tera gaon bada pyara, Main to gaya maara, Aake yahan re.... The golden voice of Yesudas has enthralled generations and soothed a million souls. Keralas gaana gandharvan and a phenomenon in South Indian film music, the top-notch singer turns 75 years on Saturday. His film career began by singing a score composed by eminent music director M.B. Sreenivasan in ‘Kalpadukal’ in 1961. Yesudas is the only singer who has bagged seven National Film Awards for best singer in the Indian film industry, a record no singer has been able to equal, let alone surpass. In 2006, Yesudas sang 16 film songs in four South Indian languages on a single day at a studio in Chennai. His home state Kerala has bestowed upon him the status of official singer of the state. An incident which left Yesudas deeply hurt was when just before his singing career started, the All India Radio refused an audition test for him, saying his voice was not good! Endowed with a divine voice and a penchant for hard work, it has been a triumphant journey for Yesudas, winning scores of accolades, including the coveted Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan. Winner of seven national awards and 23 state awards, he has sung in all Indian languages barring Assamese and Kashmiri. He also has rendered songs in English, Russian, Arabic and Latin. Visually challenged music composer Ravindra Jain had once said that if ever he got back his vision, the first person he would wish to see is Yesudas - the man with the golden voice. With more than 40,000 film songs in several languages in a career spanning five decades,Yesudas journey in the world of music continues.
