Legislator wants registration of herdsmen The member representing Gwer/Gwer -West Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Christina Alaaga, has called on the Benue State Government to commence the granting of permits and registration of nomadic herdsmen as they enter the state.Rt. Hon. Alaaga also called for the constitution of a special task force comprising stakeholders such as the Miyyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), representatives of the Benue State Crop Farmers, law enforcement agencies and traditional rulers to handle with dispatch , conflicts arising from destruction of farm crops and the rustling and killing of cattle. The federal lawmaker, in a signed release by her legislative aide, Christopher Tyoakaa, condemned the persistent armed attacks on Benue farmers by suspected Fulani herdsmen and called for administrative measures from all the tiers of government to put an end to the lingering crises in the state. She urged the media to educate the Fulani herdsmen and the Tiv farmers on the historic relationship that had existed between the Fulani and the Tiv people as well as the need for them to sustain that relationship by sheathing their swords for peace to reign. Hon. Alaaga urged members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in her constituency and Benue State to keep faith with the Gabriel Suswam administration. She commended the recent defection of some chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the PDP in Gwer-West Local Government Area which, she explained, is an indication that the PDP is waxing stronger in the state. The lawmaker averred that, with the massive achievements of the Suswam administration in the state and the recent replacement of the PDP national chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, with Alhaji Adamu Muazu, Benue people would witness more defections to the ruling party – PDP. She urged her constituents to remain resolute in their support for the PDP, noting that even at the National Assembly two APC lawmakers, Titsi Ganama and Haske Hananiya of the House of Representatives from Adamawa, recently defected from the APC to the PDP in order to be in the mainstream politics in Nigeria. According to her, the defection of a PDP member from Benue State in the House of Representatives is a case of one lost and one gained as Hon. Col. Benjamin Aboho, representing Kwande /Ushongo Federal Constituency, left the APC for the PDP, while Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Jime , left the PDP for the APC, adding that the position of the Benue PDP members in the House is still unshaken.
