Leichhardt Elects Greens Mayoral Leadership Team - LMC Media Release - 25 September Leichhardt Councillors last night elected Greens Councillors Rochelle Porteous as Mayor and Daniel Kogoy as Deputy at the annual mayoral election. Cr Porteous paid special tribute in her election speech to the work done by Council and the community and former Mayor Byrne in recent weeks in responding to the Rozelle fire tragedy on 4 September. “It has shaken our community to the core,” Cr Porteous said. “But we are a community, a strong community and the Rozelle fire, while tragic, has also brought out the best in us.” “I am proud to live in a community such as ours – a community that is generous, compassionate and always reaches out to others.” When last Leichhardt Mayor during 2011-12, Cr Porteous said Council achieved more than in any previous term. “It would not be an exaggeration to say that the number of big building projects that council delivered was unprecedented,” Cr Porteous said. “We also delivered some very significant improvements for the community like the Community and Cultural Plan; we were the most improved Council for reducing DA processing times in 2012 and winner of the Most Sustainable Council in NSW in 2012.” In the next twelve month term, Cr Porteous said she will work even harder. “We will deliver a multipurpose childcare centre in Leichhardt; we will get Bells Store open to the public; we will build our section of the Greenway and lobby Government to complete the Greenway,” Cr Porteous said. “This term of Council will also have a strong focus on enabling the development of affordable and supported housing and on building better active and public transport networks.” Cr Porteous said that the adoption and implementation of the Callan Park Masterplan and proper community consultation for the Bays Precinct are also urgent priorities. “We have a State Government with an agenda to amalgamate Councils, remove local planning powers from local Councils and compulsorily acquire large numbers of homes and businesses to build private tollways in our local area,” Cr Porteous said. “Local democracy, environmental sustainability and community needs must be top priorities. “This term of Council will not be an easy one – but in my almost 11 years on Council, I have never had an easy year.” For media interviews, phone Rochelle Porteous on 0418 213054.
