Leigh Presidents match The traditional end of season intra-club - TopicsExpress

Leigh Presidents match The traditional end of season intra-club match was played out under warm if cloudy skies which in itself was a marked improvement from previous years. In the end the Leigh XI triumphed though as ever, cricket was the winner. In a two innings match there are too many incidents to record so I will pick up on some highlights. Isaac bowled a very tidy line despite his unorthodox clothing taking 5 wickets in the match. Gabe is also showing why Nashy is having nightmares about retaining his place opening next season. Charles Charles Charlie Charles took a scarcely believable seven catches even finding time to drop the easiest. Tom Gallimore skied Joes bowling straight to him only for Tom to charge down the wicket and put Joe off for a humiliating drop. Next ball a riled Joe got revenge by mankading him. Ferg and Xander even took a catch each - rare indeed recently - though the catch of the day (with apologies to Charles) was Matthew Omer who covered twenty yards at high speed to quite brilliantly take a catch and the Champagne moment. The Leigh XI clearly won the sledging though kudos for Tebbo for some inspired reverse sledging. After a couple of barbs came his way he would walk off to leg taking longer than a Ben Gorton field placement before ambling back to the crease, pawing at the ground with his boot and muttering insults under his breath. It was a hugely effective strategy and we all eventually gave up. An absolute stinker of an LBW decision from his own Captain brought his resolute innings to end. A reverse sweep near six from Stu was a pleasure as was a trademark straight six from Bobby. Remarkably though, the batting plaudits went to Ben Gorton for a fine 50 in the second innings and to (gasp) MTR for a 20 ball 50 in the first innings and a rapid 20 batting at 11 in the second earning an unexpected nod for MoM from the President. The youngsters all performed admirably and Harry Taylor definitively put to bed the question of who is the best cricketer (and umpire) in the Taylor family. It was fitting that Graham Burton took the final wicket and we hope to see him back spinning webs after his close season ankle op. Thanks to Paula and Louisa for their excellent hospitality - it was very much appreciated as were the cakes at tea. A highly enjoyable end to the season showing again why Leigh Cricket Club is such a pleasure to play for. MTR
