Leigh Sales: One thing Australians are fairly united in, is the belief that this countrys gun laws are vastly superior to Americas. But one federal senator claims if Australia was a bit more like the US, this weeks Sydney siege could have turned out differently. David Lyonhjelm reckons if gun laws were relaxed and one of the hostages had had a concealed gun, they could have taken out the lunatic. Senator, to have even a 95% confidence that one or more of the 17 hostages were carrying (concealed), you would need for one in every six average Australians to carry a concealed weapon. That has several implications that Im certain you have not accounted for. 1. There are a lot more guns (inadvertently) accessible to people who want to kill with them. Cue gun homicides as observed in the US. 2. The aggressor also has access to more weaponry. He brings it with him. 3. He knows that someone else is likely to be armed. He comes prepared. He searches people. He shoots to kill if a thinks a hostage is reaching for a pocket. There is no assurance that an armed hostage wins in a shoot out anyway. Relaxing the gun laws like this, is a godawful suggestion.
