Leigh V Stafford match report Due to Captain Cotto’s absence - TopicsExpress

Leigh V Stafford match report Due to Captain Cotto’s absence the team was led by David Nash today. He promptly lost the toss but we ended up batting anyway, which would have been his choice. The outfield was “Gallimore smooth” but we couldn’t roll the track as the roller was apparently “locked”. (hint: if you ever lose anything do not ask D Nash to investigate) Wilko and Will opened slowly and steadily getting to 30 off the first eleven overs. It was all a bit dull to be honest, the bowling was solid and the pitch was bouncy and an hour passed without much to report. However Leigh’s batting then proceeded to slowly self implode. This was not a case of us going for the glory shots, more a case of us just batting really badly. Ben Gallimore got a daisy cutter from the top end that was a bit harsh, but even so one could argue he shouldn’t have been camped in his crease. Bobby had a real grievance in being caught out on the boundary. The fielder said he was inside the ropes; the Leigh team could clearly see he was not. What choice did the umpires have? One of the great pleasures of our club is that when faced with such situations I think we all know our duty is to be honest. We display this every week and we don’t want to place the umpires in that situation. Extras top scored with 26, Bobby next on 14, then Wilko on 13. All out for 97 after a game display of resilience by the tail which at 64-8 could have been out more cheaply. A bad batting display. Our bowling was good, but not good enough. We needed to take our chances but on two crucial occasions we didn’t with both Durose and Xander dropping catches we needed them to take. Durose overall had what was described as a “bad day at the office” by the stand in Captain. Stafford used the quick outfield better than we did nudging and edging their way to the total with five wickets down in the end. The wickets were taken by Bobby, Wilko and Ben Gallimore who along with Nashy had nothing to be embarrassed by with their performance with the ball in hand. Being beaten by a better side is something one has to deal with. Being beaten by a side I rate below us is harder to stomach. A listless end-of-season type of performance from Leigh. Man of the match was awarded to John Cotton. Champagne moment given to Al for some spirited commitment, getting his body right behind the ball fielding on the boundary. MTR
