Leigh indoor v “Potentials” match report As reported yesterday our first victory in a close game. Cotto won the toss (eh!?) and put them in and opened the bowling with Wilko. Four overs later and with them on 52 this did not appear inspired. They didn’t bowl badly at all but perhaps a little consistent for this format. The 30 runs conceded by Cotto was harsh but a little eye-watering. JD and Joe were next up with the ball in hand and their five wickets kept the pair down to a net 3. Two clean bowled from Joe was representative of a good spell from both. Aaron “expensive” Bell and Max “double facepalm” Thowless-Reeves were next up and did OK. The batsmen were solid enough as was the bowling and even though there were no boundaries the lack of wickets (only two run-outs) allowed them to get to a net 24. Finally it was Bobby and Nashy to wrap things up. I think it is obvious to us all that Nashy is struggling with this format and while he may be constantly highlighting the amount of swing he gets another 3 leg side wides tells a different story. Actually to be fair they bowled well and the batsmen found it hard to score and go to an extras-boosted net 11. So the oppo got to 90, which was a good comeback after being at 52 after the first quarter of their innings. We fielded better and are showing signs of coming to grips with the fielding side. Not too many chances went to hand and we might have preferred a few more direct hits from throws but overall a pretty good performance I reckon. Credit to Bobby for a snorter taking out the keepers stumps from behind the bowler and to Joe for a couple of close run outs from a side on angle. Our batting started well. Cotto and Wilko started off beautifully. Chanceless accumulation saw them up to 35 by the end of the third over and an unlikely opening stand parity was a possibility however a fourth over 3 wicket meltdown saw them pegged back to 25. Still a good start. Next up the quiet but deadly duo of JD and Joe Gallimore added another 29. Joe looked a little back-foot heavy on a couple of shots but it didn’t cost them in the end and JD was looking very positive and the running was sharp. Good performance. Yours truly and Bobby reprised the last game with MTR manfully taking on the burden of the wickets to protect the fagile ego of Flowers Jr. The net score of 5 fails to reflect that Bobby got to a highly creditable 24 while MTR at the other end scored….-19. Apologies lads. Some poor shots and every catch being taken and stumps thrown down ended up with us posting a rather sorry score. After the mini-disaster of pair three it was left to AB and D Nash to try and close in on the 30 runs we needed to win. A doable score but it requires a good knock and a bit of luck and fortunately both were on hand. After starting slowly with 5 in the first over the lads put on 10 then 10 and then in the final over got to parity with three balls left, got in front with the penultimate ball and blocked out the final ball to leave us with 95 runs and the victory. A very well timed and executed chase – well done to you both. How on earth Nashy managed to end up with only 9 runs leaving Aaron with a scarcely believable 27 is anyone’s guess, but Aaron going through unbeaten – the only LCC player to do so - tells its own story. Overall a better performance and a deserved victory. We are starting to get the hang of things. Our fielding was sharp and better organised. Our bowling was generally very good I thought though we have to stop the wides (7) and particularly no-balls (7) which cost us a total 24 runs! Our batting still concedes too many wickets from poor shots and poor choices (Wilko and MTR especially) but it is improving as is the running (…again MTR…). We’re not the finished article in the cage yet, but I don’t fancy the oppositions chances from now on. MTR
