Lena Headey’s Queen Gorgo picks up a sword and dishes some inspirational speechifyin’ for Noam Murro’s “300: Rise of an Empire”, the long-awaited sequel to Zack Snyder’s “300″. As you can see from the titles, Snyder is still a producer on this one, and though the film seems to keep much of the visual flair from the first film, setting a lot of the movie on water definitely gives it something new. At least, enough that we don’t think we’re watching the same-o, same-o. The trailer is perhaps a tad too muted for its own good, and could use a little bit more of the bombastic flair that made the trailers for “300″ so memorable. But hey, room to improve, right? The movie isn’t due out until next year, after all. Though I’ll give it this: the horse on the ocean bit was something I did NOT see coming. Based on Frank Miller’s latest graphic novel “Xerxes” and told in the breathtaking visual style of the blockbuster “300,” this new chapter of the epic saga takes the action to a fresh battlefield—on the sea—as Greek general Themistokles attempts to unite all of Greece by leading the charge that will change the course of the war. “300: Rise of an Empire” pits Themistokles against the massive invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes, and Artemesia, vengeful commander of the Persian navy. Starring Eva Green, Rodrigo Santoro, Sullivan Stapleton, with Lena Headey reprising her role as Queen Gorgo from the first movie. Battling in theaters next year March 7, 2014.
