Lenasia Residents block highway: Residents of Lenasia, south of Johannesburg, yesterday blocked the Golden Highway near Wimbledon Road during a service delivery protest in the morning. They blockaded the roads with burning tyres and rubble, prompting motorists to look for other exits out of the suburb. Police spokesperson, Lungelo Dlamini, said the residents had applied to march to the Civic Centre to raise their concerns with the local authorities. “We were surprised when they blocked the roads,” he said. Some protesters said they were angry about the disconnection of electricity and water supplies in their community while others complained that the lack of street lights has been increasing the crime rate. Aya Somla, said the street lights in extension 3 had not been working for the past few weeks. Some residents said a pamphlet was apparently handed out by taxi drivers on Friday that there would be a protest yesterday. Only taxis were being allowed in and out of the area. The roads were closed for three hours and were opened just after 9am. Police say no one was arrested and there was no damage to private property. Meanwhile, about 500 residents of Mmakau and Garankuwa in the northwest of Pretoria, yesterday blocked the M17 and R566 roads leading to Garankuwa because of the lack of water. They said their water had been cut off without notice. Residents said they had been without water for almost a week without any response. One of the residents Onika Moloko said : “There is no water in Garankuwa and we have not been warned, how long before the water is restored? We were not warned before.” thenewage.co.za/140528-1008-53-Residents_block_highway.blockade:
