“Lennard’s Corner”, Queens Road - 1930s, 1941 and 2014 These views of Lennard’s Store in Queens Rd complement Jill Moore’s earlier views of the store taken from the direction of the Victoria Rooms. The Shoe and Boot Firm of Lennards was founded by five brothers from Leicester in the 1860s and went under the name “The Public Benefit Boot Company”. They had branches throughout the West Country but their business was most successful in Bristol. As a result they decided in 1889 to base the firm in Bristol, setting up a warehouse in Temple St and making its headquarters this prominent building on the corner of Queens Rd and Triangle West. They changed their name to Lennards Ltd, and the company’s name prominently displayed on the building, as shown in the first photo, led to this being known by Bristolians as “Lennard’s Corner”. Their famous clock tower faced the Victoria Rooms. Several other well-known firms had shops in the building. Sadly, as the second photo shows, the building was completely destroyed in the blitz of 1941, along with the adjacent Triangle Cinema. The site is now occupied by Cosmo and Waitrose.
