Lennon or McCartney? (drinking) Lennon presented substance as an activist and as a vulnerable man with his lyrics on his first two solo albums (Plastic Ono Band & Imagine). Now...if we can be honest for a moment...his material released after 1971 really is quite underwhelming as it lacks that which McCartney presented in spades...imagination, musicianship and melody. Paul was...well...he seemed disinterested in or unable to pen a decent set of substantive lyrics to save his life, though it could be argued that the simple lyrics he did pen were well-constructed and benefitted from his ability to consistantly manage a song structure, any instrument and a recording studio...on 9 albums during the 70s. HMMM John would rebound with Double Fantasy in 1980, though half of the songs on that album were by Yoko. And then...he died...and Paul would produce as much garbage as he would reminders of his own brilliance during the four decades to follow Lennons passing. Lennon or McCartney? (grumble grumble) I admire Johns sincerity and rebelliousness...but Paul absolutely kicks Johns arse in the 70s as a musician, producer and as a songsmith. Though...John is responsible for much of the intriguing music released during his tenure as a Beatle during the 60s. Well...how much credit do you allow for producer George Martin and Paul...who did introduce quite a few ideas and studio tricks that John would employ. (tossing glass in fireplace) My heart says JOHN while my brain says PAUL.
