Lennys Swansong - Saints Vs Crows Saints 2 - 2 = 14 Crows 4 - 2 = 26 The Saints, led by Lenny ran through a dedicated banner carrying his young son and did so for the last time after 297 games in the tri strip. Richo describes him as incredibly selfless and an absolute ripper who would do anything for a team mate. Lenny needs 8 tackles to take the record for season tackles from Jude Bolton on 1490 tackles and Rooey needs just one goal to knock over a sixth season of fifty or more goals. At the other end of the ground the Crows play a farewell match to ‘Truck’ Rutten who will hang up the boots for the last time after 229 games – having kicked 3 goals with his first 3 kicks in AFL football. Between the radio and the TV I have heard the phrase ‘dead rubber’ three times today – no such thing as a dead rubber for the mighty saints who have so much to prove to each other to make sure we get the signatures on contracts that we need going forward. Rooey won the toss in what could be a shoot out match with Tex Walker and Rooey standing the goals at either end. A rarity was to see a number of crows shaking hands with Lenny ‘before’ the first bounce. An early centre clearance saw Steven deliver to Stanley on the forward flank and then into the forward fifty where Lenny knocked over tackle number 1. Steven has put his stamp on the game early with a third clearance in as many minutes and two of them to a Stanley mark. As the ball was sent across the ground to change direction, Spencer White presented and was rewarded for being held. His kick was good for a goal but a score review called, bringing home the bacon. A major to Spencer White. Another good centre clearance from saw the ball into the hands of Steven again for another penetration to the fifty where the Crows regained composurte, Lenny picked up another tackle and a smother but the ball swept out around the outer wing. Delaney presented early in centre square, White and anothert tackle by Hayes. The ball looked more like pinball with the ball in and out of each others fifty before Sloane delivered to the crows fifty for a one on one between Walker and Delaney but Delaney slipped leaving Tex to walk into an open goal and the scores are all tied up at one goal apiece. Lenny on 4 tackles half way through the first term. A rushed behind gave the crows a defensive kick out but the crows really don’t look settled and the Saints set play across our half forward line is holding up play as Adelaide tried to bring the ball back through the corridor. Hayes grabbed to loose ball around the outer wing and hit Rooey laces out forty out who in turn hit White in the pocket but the wrong pocket for a lefty and a minor score the result. On the return journey, the smallest bloke on the ground wearing the biggest pants (Eddie Betts) took an easy mark but created a contest around the left pocket and force from Ray saw a throw in and Fisher Gwilt Delaney Armitage, Delaney, Roberton, Ray to Ross and back to Ray who ran into an unattended goal for a goal and 8 point lead to the saints. Longer has really taken another step since Jolley came on board and has really shown he wants the number one ruck spot. We are disposing of the ball with a 74% efficiency elite level. Steven unlucky not to be paid a free for being legged. Lenny on 5 tackles. The ball sent sailing back into the crows fifty where Chips took a comfortable mark and sent the ball back on the outer wing through Armitage. As the ball was sent back in via the centre wing, Rutten through an unnecessary and ugly elbow into the face of Schneider and it will be looked at although it has no concern for Rutten in his last game but it was off the ball, intentional and high, medium impact. Goal to Walker. Lenny won the centre clearance and took his tackle count to 6 as the crows turned the ball around and brought it around the interchange side wing. Dempster kicked the behind for them and the contests again and again in the crows fifty were fierce with Newnes, Weller and Chips sent it back out to the fifty where Sloane took a strong mark 45 out. He kicked truly and the crows took the lead for the first time for the game. A few cracks began to appear late in the term with dempster and Weller being a little erratic with their delivery and although we presented well in the midfield and Gwilt filled some gaps it was sent straight back into little Bettsy who failed to benefit putting only a behind on the board. Gwilt ‘did it again’ kicking in from the square hitting Sloane 35 out who sent it straight back in over his head for 6 point.
