Lens stuck/unstuck? I rented a Nikon 80-400 mm lens (not the new version) from Keeble and Shugat in Palo Alto yesterday to take picks of the UCLA/Stanford game. Got set-up and ready to go and couldnt make the lens move away from the 80 mm position - tried a lot of things and was not going to force it. I have rented this same lens (same model - might be different actual lenses) from K&S twice before and it worked - no problem. So, I called K&S from the stadium (so loud - almost impossible to hear) to ask if there was some magic I didnt know to make it work. They had no ideas. So, eventually I gave up and shot the game at 80 mm (like 120 mm on my D7000 crop sensor). Extremely disappointed as I wanted to get those close-up action shots. After the game I took the lens back to K&S so they could see the problem. Don (who works there in rental) took it out of the bag and turned it effortlessly. It had not moved a millimeter for me - I swear! Now it works fine. No ideas. So, I am writing this to ask my photog friends if they have ever had a similar experience or know of any instances of this happening with this particular lens or any other. Knowledge is power - and right now I know nothing.
