Lent 8 3-14-14 1 Corinthians 6.19-20 19Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own?20 For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body. Temples and sanctuaries are sacred places. Into these spaces we bring gifts to honor, glorify and thank God. Entering a temple or sanctuary is a high sensory experience wherein we use touch, sight, hearing, scent, and even taste. Now consider Paul’s revelation that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. If this be true then it is important to consider what we bring into this sacred space. The obvious thing to consider is what food we are eating and how this is a gift to honor God. We also need to consider the sights and sounds of life and the way we take those into our body, our temple. This means the music, the literature, the images, the sights we focus on throughout the day are either a gift that draws us closer to God or a curse that drives us away. Touch is probably the most unexpected gift and important for as Paul points out earlier in this chapter that what we do with our bodies we do with Christ. On this the eight day of Lent, take time to consider what gifts you are bringing into the temple of the Holy Spirit. Dear God, take all of me and use me to glorify you. Help me to avoid those options of the world which would interfere with a deeper walk with you. Feed us the good food of your presence and help us become more loving. Amen.
