Lent Devotion #14: When asked what the #1 commandment to live by is, Jesus gave two answers: Love God, AND love your neighbor as yourself (Mark 12:31). I would argue that Jesus gave three answers in that moment: 1) Love God 2) Love your neighbor 3) Love yourself Id like to believe that the lesson of loving myself was first taught by a pastor or Sunday School teacher. Im guessing, though, that my first real exposure to this rule was at home; first by my parents of course, but affirmed as I sat in front of the TV, tuned in to PBS, by Mister Fred Rogers. Mister Rogers reminded me each day that I was special and worthy of love; the love of God and the love of others. Who I was and who I would become was good enough. I was special, NO MATTER WHAT! NO EXCEPTION. Mr. Rogers said, You make each day a special day. You know how, by just your being you. Theres only one person in this whole world like you. And people can like you exactly as you are. Ive learned over time that this is essential in our ability to fully love God and love others. You must know that you are special, just by being you! Im proud that my son, Jack, shares a birthday with Mister Rogers. Today is that special day. In honor of Mr. Rogers birthday, Im reminding all of us of this lesson. You are special, just by being you!
