Lent is the 40 day period between Ash Wednesday and Easter during which the Christian world remembers the events leading up to and including the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Ash Wednesday is not celebrated by all of Christendom, primarily the Catholic, Anglican, Episcopalian, Presbyterian, Methodist, and Lutheran churches, because of their common liturgy. (Liturgy is a fixed set of ceremonies used during worship) The ashes, composed of the ashes from burned palm leaves and oil, are used to draw a cross on the forehead, to remind them of the need to repent as they remember the cross of Jesus, which followed the triumphal entry into Jerusalem.
