Lenten Reflection (Jesus) said to him, Follow me. Luke 5:27 Fr. Damiens (St. Damien of Molokai) birth name was Joseph De Veuster, though all who knew him called him Jef. Like many Catholics of that era, Jefs family owned a book on the saints lives. Jef and his siblings loved it when their mother read stories from this book. And it seems to have sparked their imaginations as Jef and his brother Auguste (2 years older than Jef) dreamed and then promised that when they grew up they would serve God together as missionary priests. They would be just like the 3rd Century physician martyrs Sts. Cosmas and Damien, twin brothers who accepted no payment for their medical services, attracting many to the Christian faith. At age 19, when Jef was first accepted into the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts, he kept this childhood promise by assuming the name Brother Damien.
