Leon has had some wobbly days. He has been too and fro the vets - TopicsExpress

Leon has had some wobbly days. He has been too and fro the vets as his large intestine were struggling to digest the food he was eating caused by years of neglect. Basically it doesnt know what to do :/ Even though he was on a bland diet of boiled chicken, he continued to have the squits and a continuous clean up job was necessary many times a day. It is very sad to see a dog who cannot help what he has done (dripping diarrhoea) be so uncontrollably terrified of you when you walk in the room. Shaking, hiding away from you and trying to get as close to the back door as possible. This has been a long term problem and the vet thinks that he has probably had the runs on and off untreated, for a long time. He seems to associate having accidents on the floor with a very negative behaviour from people, so I think that he has been very badly hurt when he has done this before - not that it is his fault! Today he seems to have, once again, turned a positive corner and managed to eat four tiny meals without any help. The vet decided to put him on a short course of steroids to bring down the inflammation in his intestines, but only a very short course because one of the side effects is muscle wastage and that is the last thing he needs, but without getting rid of the inflamed bowel, we wont be getting rid of the diarrhoea. He has also been put on another antibiotic alongside the one he is having now and he will remain on abs until there is a complete clean up of his condition. He has had blood tests done and all was clear and his faecal test came back clear too. Because he has diarrhoea, he has now got Dermatitus round his back end, so he has got various creams being put on that throughout the day after numerous clean ups. The tragic thing is that to make him better he has to be fed and medicated and just feeding him has caused him more problems :( I, of course, am having a complete mental breakdown(!) over this but the vet is not surprised at the various things that have cropped up and has said that it was all to be expected. It is a slow, slow job with him and although we are medicating him, a lot of his recovery is down to his system working properly again. With all that said, he continues to have a perfect nature and his temperament throughout it all has remained the same. He would be forgiven for having a snap or a growl, but nope! He has remained perfect.
