Leonard Martin Knauss, 87, of Hyde Park and formerly of Rome, PA, died Friday, August 1, 2014, at Vassar Bros. Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. Born May 15, 1927 in Poughkeepsie, he was the son of the late George C. and Bertha Fretenburg Knauss. He was a graduate of Poughkeepsie High School and the State University of NY Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences at White Plains. Mr. Knauss proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II. Leonard enjoyed polka dancing and was a member of the Pennsylvania Giant Pumpkin Growers Association. He was also an active participant in the Pennsylvania Senior Olympics, and for a time, enjoyed fly fishing and tying his own flies. A Union Electrician, he was a member of IBEW Local #363 until his retirement. In retirement, Leonard worked part-time for the United States Postal Service in Pennsylvania. He is survived by his three sons, Rick Knauss of Paducah, KY, Jim Knauss, and wife, Karon, of Lancaster, PA, and Phil Knauss and wife, Debi, of Poughkeepsie; seven grandchildren; one great grandson; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter, Marcia Knauss, and two brothers, George Knauss Jr. and Gordon Knauss. A period of visitation will take place from 9 to 10 am, Tuesday, August 5th at Sweets Funeral Home, Rte. 9, Hyde Park. Funeral services will follow at 10 am at the Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the family plot in Wappingers Falls Rural Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Sweets Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park.
