Leroy Eliot SLAM STEWART - birthday centennial - TopicsExpress

Leroy Eliot SLAM STEWART - birthday centennial today! 1914-1987. Started as a violin player, switched to bass at the age of 20, had perfect pitch and a wonderful swing feel. In the late 30es he and Slim Gaillard teamed to Slim and Slam, the biggest hit of whom was Flat Foot Floogie. He was one of the most recorded and important bassists of the Swing era, but also played Bebop with Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker and can be heard on some of their classic recordings from that time, too. I always enjoy his unique recognizable playing and sound of a combination of bow played bass and his humming simultaneous with that on a number of recordings I have with various other artists. His unique sound and style was imitated by Major Holley on at least two Quincy Jones recordings from beg. the 70es - Hummin (Gula Matari), and the bonus track Shag Nasty released on the CD reissue of Big Band Bossa Nova/Quintessence.
