Les Boréales Festival in Caen has this wonderful new thing. They take the author to a dinner with readers, who meet in a private house, to dine, drink and discuss. And there I was last night, at Diner en nord at Martine Almys house in a quiet suburb of Caen, with people from all walks of life. 12 people sitting around the round table in this lovely Normandie house, enjoying a home cooked meal. Everybody said something (including the almost-speaking-french author) and only one person spoke at a time, for almost five hours! (Only the French are capable of such a feat. Elsewhere people always fall into small groups after the main course.) The result was one of the nicest & cozyest evenings of my life. Five hours flew by in twenty minutes. Here I felt I had finally entered the living room of France, and here I finally found my French. Such warmth it was, such humour, such interesting points of view, such camembert and such chèvre... And now I cant wait to get home and try to make Mousse au chocolate á la Martine. Merci Festival Les Boréales! Merci Jérôme Rémy! Merci Marion Cazy! Merci Martine & co!
