On the occasion of the December 12 Th celebrations, a Cultural event took place at the University of San Diego, with the participation of Mexican Painter Ana Julia Aguado. This wonderful USD tradition honors the importance of Our Lady of Guadalupe in all the region. Founded in 1949 in the heart of San Diego, USD is an Institution dedicated to providing academic excellence, with Catholic, intellectual and social traditions and an open vision to integrate students from different countries, religions and ideologies to affect positively an increasingly multicultural society. As part of the United Front Multicultural Center of the University, the Latino students organization represented by the Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan (MEChA) and the Association of Chicana Activists (ACha) organized a typical Mexican dinner accompanied with Mariachi at the Ernest and Jean Hahn University Center followed by the unveiling of the painting by Ana Julia Aguado., The Mexican student Victor Guadarrama MEChA events programmer, made the introduction then asking the artist to say a few words. In front an audience of 500 people the painter explained that her piece title Our Lady of Guadalupe from the West Coast represents the Virgin in a different context, an environment for the people that live at the West Coast of the United States and that are directly connected to the Pacific Ocean from San Diego, to Long Beach, Los Angeles and San Francisco, the painting shows the Virgin of Guadalupe emerging from the sea, the inhabitants of this region regardless of race or culture venerate the Morenita which goes beyond all frontiers and has become a Spiritual Emblem specially for Mexico and Latin-America. The celebration continued with the presentation of Aztec Dancers and a procession with candles and Mariachi music to the Immaculata Church located on the University. With a Mass in honor to Mary Patroness of the Americas, students and teachers filled the Church, praying and asking for peace, justice and healing in Ferguson and all the communities affected for racial strife, for the Children who have arrived alone to the U.S / Mexico border this year, for those affected by war and violence specially in the Middle East, for the Nations advance in their commitment to protecting human dignity, for the Catholic Church, for the leaders of our countries to work together on compassionate immigration reforms that promote the family union, and finally for the dead and kidnapped in Mexico, especially for the 43 students from Guerrero. The Alms collection was offered, to Casa del Migrante a non-profit temporary shelter for migrants in Tijuana, founded on 1987. At the end of the Mass they sang the traditional mañanitas to the Virgin and offered hundreds of roses to Her image. Finally they went back to the Hahn Center with Our Lady of Guadalupe from the West Coast by Ana Julia Aguado and watch the University Folk Ballet performance. Ana Julia Aguado was born in Queretaro Mexico, she studied Architecture and Painting techniques at the National School of Fine Arts in Paris, France., is a Member of the National Association of Women Artist in New York, she has shown in important museums like the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY (Iris Center for Education), The Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington DC, The Museum of Latin American Art in Los Angeles, California, among others.
