Lesbians in a musical! Whodathunkit? Today Im spending some time doing some research for the kid characters in my show. A friend of mine introduced me to the musical Fun Home which is an adaptation of comicbook artist Alison Bechdels memoir of the same name. Its at once a young lesbians coming of age story and the story of her relationship with her father who tragically committed suicide. The book is stunning. And its great to see stories like this told in a kind of mainstream medium. Admission: Im definitely not a fan of this style of singing. Frankly its making my ears bleed. I cant listen for much longer than a minute. But Im interested in the way the narrative, the dialogue and the abstract elements of the music come together to tell this wonderful story. Its helping me to figure out how to structure my own show, how to make the kid characters really 3D, which is the whole purpose of this research. youtu.be/wMJvLTZOhpE
