Less than 24 hours to go before the Vote for the campaign for the NZ Seabird of the Year closes - and we still have lots of stories to tell you. Find out how we have been working with the communities on Gau Island to search for and protect the habitat of petrels below: The Gau community are extremely proud to share their island with their Kacau ni Gau (Fiji petrel), and would be devastated should it become extinct and disappear for ever. NatureFiji-MareqetiViti works very closely with the community, forging a strong partnership to save the Fiji petrel together. This includes raising awareness in schools and villages through workshops and eco-camps. Fiji petrels are at risk from alien invasive species:-cats and rats (which will raid their nests, killing chicks and destroying eggs),and pigs,(which are very likely to trample on burrows, destroying nests, eggs and chicks). NatureFiji-MareqetiViti has run practical workshops showing communities how to catch pigs. Control of pig numbers is now maintained by a team from the Gau community. A recent eco-camp at Gau secondary school included: bird-watching, an Amazing Race, a night-time search for Fiji ground frogs, and making Fiji petrels and collared petrels from plastic and fishing line (to raise awareness of the danger of these items to seabirds). Vote for the Fiji petrel now - we are now in Blind voting, we will not know the results of the voting until the announcement. Make your vote count! Visit birdoftheyear.org.nz/, cast your vote and do not forget to confirm it through your email!
