Less than a decade ago, the Perdido Key beach mouse (Peromyscus polionotus trissyllepsis) nearly went extinct after hurricanes flooded and scoured its island habitat down to bare sand. But as the coastal dune habitat recovered, beach mouse populations slowly responded and their distribution is now approaching a 30-year high. Despite this resiliency, beach mice remain vulnerable. Because of previous habitat loss and fragmentation, and current development pressure, they may be just a storm away from extinction.
