Less than a month after the war began a Mitchell B-25 medium bomber crashed into Lake Apopka in the center of Florida killing all three crewmen on board. Witnesses fishing in a boat less than 100 yards from the crash said a propeller blade came off the left engine and entered the cockpit. A recovery crew recovered most of the larger pieces but the engines, buried in 10 feet of muck were never recovered. A search today would require a magnetometer that could penetrate 10-15 ft of sediment. If the engines are still there they should be well preserved by the sediment.
